Another Ragmask variant - same design, simpler construction

First a 12" wide piece of cotton that's 6" tall and folded over two pieces of the cheaper satin that's the same width but half an inch less tall. I'm not even bothering to make more than one edge straight here:

Then mark the template marked (silver sharpie for me as satin deforms
if you try to use a fine-tipped marker):

Leaving a line to follow with the sewing machine:

Now sewn, with the excess cut off:

New retainer shape - just half sewn to one side. The other side is a mirror image:

That's what it looks like when you pop the mask into it's correct shape. Trim the length of those prongs unti they kinda just stick in the center of the mask where the sewn fabric is:

Feed 13cm (5") of 2mm copper wire into the pocket.
This time, I am experimenting with NOT
bending the end back to be less sharp:

Sew 18" (46cm) straps on:

Put the tempate back on and mark the bottom edge, then cut that off:

Move the wire to center and shape it like the bridge of your nose.
Use the zig-zag stitch to neaten the bottom edge:

A close of of the prongs gently sticking into the fabric,
as the mask is in it's wearable shape:

Wear it!

By tying a bow at the back of you neck. If you nose is the right shape,
this doen't slip down in casual (even extended) use.

Confirming the benefit of the retainer

I cut out those retainers to confirm that the satin pulls
on to my face with each breath in:

The ridge that's formed from the vertical sew line down the center of the mssk doesn't pull in with each breath (yay), but the two cheeks do (boo). It's not a total collapse onto the wearers nostrils and lips, but it is a small decrease in breathability. It is also unsightly when viewed by another person as it looks like you have gills now as that fabric flaps in and out either side of your mouth.

Review

The two seaparate retainers are fiddly to set in position ahead of wearing. But those and a nose-wire that's not yet been formed into a nose shape, would allow this mask to mail across the country failrly flat.
