Better straps (from cotton cloth)

Cotton fabric should be cut with scissors to18" long 

and 2" wide (46cm x 5cm). 

Fold the two freyed edges into the center liks this (and sew):

Then fold that once more, and sew another line the length of the strap.

Lastly use a zig-zag stitch to make the ends less of a mess:
